Let’s talk about shame – that powerful, magnetic emotion that colours how you see yourself and experience the world. In my time as a hypnotherapist, I’ve found shame to be one of the most defining yet least discussed aspects of our psychological makeup. It’s taboo, it’s uncomfortable, and that’s precisely why we need to shine a light on it.

In this video, I share professional insights from my practice about how shame becomes embedded in our identity from a very young age. Think of your current sense of self as a weighted experiential conclusion that began with early childhood experiences – like ripples from stones thrown into a stream. Those first impressions carry the most weight, with subsequent experiences either reinforcing or occasionally challenging our core beliefs about ourselves.

While I can’t guide you through a complete regression therapy session here (that requires the safety of a collaborative therapeutic relationship), I’m offering you practical tools to begin examining and releasing shame on your own. The “rusty hinge” of your fixed identity can begin to move again with some careful attention and self-compassion.

The first approach I recommend is surprisingly simple yet profoundly effective: talk about your shame. When you voice what feels unspeakable to someone who isn’t shame-based themselves, their response might literally “perforate your foundations of shame.” What you consider terrible or embarrassing, others might view as a profound life experience – a perspective that can be transformative.

For those who prefer a solo approach, I share a technique to trace uncomfortable feelings back to their source. Next time you notice that “icky” feeling that makes you reach for a biscuit, go shopping, or distract yourself, set aside quiet time later to explore it. Ask yourself when you last felt that feeling, then keep tracing back to find earlier occurrences until you reach a formative experience.

When you locate these early shame-creating moments, examine them with adult eyes: What did you actually know then? What power did you have? How much choice was available to you as a child? This process helps you recognise that the protective conclusions you drew then don’t need to define you now. Today, you have agency, knowledge, and choices you didn’t have before.

Perhaps most importantly, while revisiting these memories, bathe that younger version of yourself in compassion. Ask, “If I truly loved myself, what would I need to tell myself in this moment?” – then share that wisdom with your younger self. This integration rebuilds self-esteem and creates a more cohesive sense of identity that isn’t dominated by shame.

Through this work, you can replace a shame-based story with one that serves you better. Neither version is absolute truth, but the question becomes: what story is more workable for you today? What serves your best interests now? The goal isn’t to erase your past but to learn from it and then move forward as the person you are today rather than living in the reflected light of prior shame.

I’d love to hear if this resonates with you. Shame thrives in silence, and sometimes, simply acknowledging it can be the first step toward freedom. This video isn’t just about understanding shame – it’s about giving you practical tools to begin healing it, so you can experience life through a clearer lens and develop a more compassionate relationship with yourself.
